Molds are naturally present in wood, cellulose, and paper products. When these items are exposed to moisture, molds can flourish and grow. The most important safe-guard against mold growth is to remove excess moisture. Also, excessive moisture should not be allowed to remain in a building over a long period of time.
Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Many molds are useful in producing essential foods. Mold produces some wonderful results. Yeast is a form of mold used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of bleu cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and life-saving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillium chrysogenum). As with many things that provide value to our lives, excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, or exposure to molds by some people may present health concerns.
The Out of the Ordinary
Intrusion of water into your home or place of business is an out of the ordinary event. This could result from either a water incursion from long-standing leaks or from poor humidity control. Wherever water can accumulate, mold can thrive A water damage situation offers opportunities for mold spores that are normally present on surfaces to grow and multiply, and it is one of the reasons for promptly drying any water damage. Moisture and humidity levels may be increased in a structure that has experienced a water damage. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide food sources for molds (given an adequate amount of moisture) to flourish. A water damage that is left unattended for any period of time may lead to mold growth, which, in turn, leads to indoor environmental conditions that are “out of the ordinary”.
Health concerns may arise when excessive mold has grown indoors. Concerns are more likely to arise when “At Risk” individuals are exposed to mold growth. “At Risk” people can include immune suppressed or compromised individuals, young children, and individuals with chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and severe allergies. Some types of mold may cause a runny nose, eye irritation, respiratory problems, coughing, throat irritation and sneezing.
Toxic mold is the latest nightmare when it comes to Indoor Environmental Quality. We’ve been helping our customers throughout Wisconsin deal with it since 1993. Our Certified Indoor Environmentalist specialists maintain current certifications through NAMP (National Association of Mold Professionals). It takes a real commitment to personal excellence and our personnel have that commitment.
Our program consists of a 4 step remediation plan:
Phase I: Savings on medical copays and deductibles
We will visit the site. We will inspect the suspect areas of the home as well as the uninfected areas. This along with test results will help us to determine a remediation plan.
Phase II: Pre-Testing
Next, is the mold toxic. Data from test cultures are analyzed for viability and certified by an independent lab. Either a bilogical risk has been found in your home or your home has been declared free from contamination. If a risk is identified, a treatment and maintenance plan is discussed with you.
Phase III: Remediation
We will first set-up containment if necessary. Next we will set HEPA air scrubbers in the infected areas. Next we will remove all fungal infected materials for disposal. Next we will remove all fungi from permanent structures.
Next we will air wash the infected areas. Next we will wipe all surfaces in the infected areas.
Note: Our air washing and wiping process is ongoing throughout the remediation.
Phase IV: Post Testing
After a job has been completed, usually within 24 - 72 hours, Specialized Cleaning re-tests treated surfaces in the environment where the risks were identified and remediation was performed. Analysis information form the cultures taken are made available to you in the strictest of confidence. From here, we provide a before and after evaluation of the work completed to demonstrate and provide assurance that the workplace has been cleaned and is now safe.
